
Moving Checklist
This key moving checklist will help you keep track of everything during your move, whether you're packing your old place or nesting in the new.
- Choose a moving service or moving company
- Create moving binder for contracts or important documents
- Schedule disconnection or transfer of electric, gas, telephone, lawn care service, subscriptions, water, trash, laundry, TV, and internet services
- Get copies of your medical records from current doctors and dentists
- Transfer children's school records
- Obtain your insurance records
- Make arrangements for your house pets
- If you're moving with house plants, research your moving carrier and state transportation laws
- Obtain security deposit (if renting your home)
- Gather necessary packing materials
- Service your large appliances (drain water hoses, turn off valves)
- Return library books
- Schedule a change-of-address with the Post Office
- Retrieve any items from dry cleaners, safety deposit boxes, or cold storage
- If you're banking with a local credit union, transfer bank accounts
- Leave items that you'll need immediately after the move in a designated place to be loaded last and unpacked first
- Discard or plan to use food and perishable items
- Pack suitcases and overnight bags for your travel during the move
- Confirm your travel reservations (e.g., car rental, plane tickets, hotel stays)
- Set aside travel essentials for car or plane (e.g., games, phone chargers, snacks, water, first aid, etc)
- Draw up a floor plan of your new place to map out future furniture placement
- Check to make sure your electric, gas, telephone, lawn care service, subscriptions, water, trash, laundry, TV, and internet services are connected
- Choose your local doctors and dentists in your new city
- Make plans for the disposal or recycling of your used packing materials
